I am (unfortunately) unfamilar with Mambety's work, but am still impressed by his humanism and the prospect that there is a relatively major artist working in that corner of the world. Still I completely understand what you are saying too about the allegorical side that elevates it still further and in a different direction. Reminds one here of some middle-eastern cinema in tone and focus. Anyway, lovely capsule as always.

Correction: Mambety sadly passed away well before his time in 1998 of lung cancer. I see he was a noted composer, orator and poet as well.

The curtain opens and out walks a young man. Suddenly, the flashlight shines brightly on him and the unmasking begins.

An announcer's voice booms loudly across the three-tiered theatre:

"Ladies, Gentlemen and bacha log, introducing Srikanth Srinivasan, the man formerly known as JAFB....."

Congrats on the published article Srikanth :) Great to see that on mubi. I had planned to see the new version but both you and Satish have certainly provided me enough incentive to check it out soon.

Beautiful essay JAFB - Only someone as articulate as yourself could do justice to this oddball curiosity titled Agneepath. Agree with much of what you say and especially enjoyed your deconstruction of the angry young man figure. And your right, it is INSANE! Hope to read more from you soon on Mubi!
