Striking caps of a film I saw last week. Many of teh visuals are compelling, others seem too self-contiously arty. Swinton is fine, though she stays teh course in personal style. The two Kevins, who appeared at the Angelika Film Center in Manhattan for an engrossing after-viewing Q & A, were however, quite good.
The film does not achieve greatness, but it’s still solid enough and well woirth a look-see.
Thank you, Sam. I was kind of blown away by the film. I see that it’s being dissed for flat symbolism and artificial construction, but I think it does much more with its assembly of images than such an assessment allows. The way it synthesizes its image is not like BLACK SWAN but like UN CHIEN ANDALOU. And none of the recent films can claim such a lineage.
That’s a mighty assertion there Srikanth, but I respect it. I confess I’ve had difficulties with Ransay’s past work (was no fan of RATCATCHER) and have seen teh ‘style over substance’ application a valid one. Still, I’m happy to hear the film blew you away, and do like it quite a bit myself regardless of the lesser issues.
You are making a real art out of screengrabs – loved this post and the on a separation; both films have a strong visual style and your choice of shots are exemplary in illustrating the patterns that can appear in such authorial works. It’s been ages since we spoke! Anyway, looking forward to your end of year list…
Thanks so much, Omar. True that. I’ve been busy planing for and attending the Bangalore film fest and hope to catch up with blog reading once this is done. Looking forward to reading about your favorite films this year as well!
She saw me lookin’ at ‘er.
She gave it a son.
I’m saving a life.
Hello?
You call it stupid.
The eye of change,
I start baby.
I learned it in a Vietnam.
I’ve done some damage.
Empath,
That’s the menu.
Nobody’s exempt
From receiving empathy.
I’m gettin’ outta here.
That’s the immaculate Nazi hunter.
We’ve had enough of humans right now.
I’m talkin’ to you.
Is this medicated?
Talkin’ to him,
Talkin’.
Like a growing monster
In your opinion.
Whadda we do?
Usin’ our heads
Not our hearts
Cull the kid.
That’s important
They get identified.
I’m just
Kinda absolutely
Talkin’ about
Kevin,
The filmmaker’s son.
Do movies impregnate?
Splendid,
At least it’s understood
We’re dealin’ with inhuman beings.
Makes them easier to kill.
Kill ‘im Carl.
If you say so.
At the movies.
